New Welding Solutions Mark Customer Care Milestone

Now offering comprehensive on-site welding, heat treating and field machining services, Tri Tool Inc. is proud to commemorate this customer care milestone with successful completion of its first major welding project. Tri Tool Thermal Services℠ (TTTS), a unit of Tri Tool Power Services Inc.™, provides field welding and heat treating services.

In October 2006, a Southeastern US Nuclear Utility consulted Tri Tool Inc. with request for a proposal to replace two 32” expansion bellows in a low-pressure condenser during a short refueling outage to commence March 2007.

The contract was awarded in December, 2006 and TTTS scheduled a pre-project site visit in January 2007 to integrate project planning with the utility’s outage planning and other key personnel. Project information was exchanged in weekly update meetings from January through the site mobilization date. TTTS also coordinated manpower availability and welder certification with United Association, Pipefitters Local Union 619.

Project Highlights

The original project scope consisted of severing and machining precision weld joints on the turbine nozzles and extraction steam piping using Tri Tool Inc.’s patented Clamshell O.D. mounted portable lathes. Manual GTAW/SMAW welding processes were specified for installation of the bellows under the TTTS Quality Control Program.

The Initial inspection of the low-pressure condenser by the utility revealed additional component failure, necessitating replacement of four additional bellows assemblies in the adjacent condenser bays. TTTS expanded manpower and equipment to accommodate the additional scope.

Upon execution of the total recovery plan, TTTS completed their assigned scope well within the utility’s revised schedule and budget. At peak loading TTTS had a total of 28 personnel on site, working two, twelve-hour shifts. Throughout the project TTTS maintained a SAFETY FIRST mindset and completed the project with ZERO accidents and ZERO first aid cases.
