The customer needed to cut and prepare approximately 50 pipes in a nuclear power plant for welding purposes. They had 3 different pipe sizes which required a different end prep for each. Due to the customer specializing in trade and services of world-known machinery equipment, they also needed the cycle time for this project to be done as quickly as possible to remain competitive.
Because a larger clamshell, model 642RBL from stock, would not work in this application, Tri Tool built a custom 638RBL-G2 to fit in the available space. Custom templates were designed for the TTM (Template Tracer Module) so that the customer could machine the desired profile on the end of the pipe in preparation for welding. We also designed an extension that would adapt the TTM to the 638RBL.
As requested, the 638 RBL can fit in the available space and machines the required pipe. With the use of the TTM, the customer can reduce the quantity of tool bits required. The tool also keeps the cycle time relatively low which makes the job more cost effective.
